Cat & Fiddle 55 mile Challenge

Sunday 2nd October myself and two other members of The Shifnal Cycling Society had a go at the Cat and Fiddle Challenge ride organised by Brian Rourke Cycles in aid of the Cystic Fibrosis Trust. A 55(ish) mile ride from Brian Rourke's shop in Burslem, up and over the famous Cat & Fiddle pass, before returning via Leek.
A really well organised event and a great route that takes in some stunning scenery over the peak district. Well over 1000 cyclists took part - we counted most of them when they came past after Martin had a blow out and we waited for the service vehicle to bring out a new tyre!
On arrival back at Brian Rourke's shop we mingled with some of the legends of cycling including Sean Kelly pictured below (on the left).

We’d booked a couple of days off work so that we could go to the beach to celebrate our 7th wedding anniversary. On Sunday evening Nellie suggested we pop down to Wimbledon instead to see if we could get into the ground to soak up some of the tennis atmosphere.

Our cheap off peak train tickets (£9 return Birmingham - London) meant we didn’t arrive in Wimbledon until after 3pm. The queue to get inside the ground was massive and the approximate waiting time was still 4 hours! So, we went for some lunch in Wimbledon village.

We went back to look at the queue at 6:30pm and it was still just as long as before. We sat on the grass and contemplated our next move. Suddenly, we heard it from one of the officials that they were about to let a whole load of people in. The queue began to move quickly so we joined it. After 20 minutes we were in the ground and standing on Henman Hill. Entrance fee was only £14 each.

We began watching the men’s quarterfinal between Nadal and Del Potro on the big screen and noticed another queue behind us. This was a line of people waiting to get hold of seats in centre court as they became available from ticket holders who’d had enough and gone home. We tried our luck in the queue and within 10 minutes we had two tickets for Centre court! The tickets cost £10 each and all monies went to charity.

We managed to catch the last two sets of what was a very exciting game. At one stage we thought Nadal had blown his chances when Del Potro made a very strong come back.

On leaving the ground after 10pm we were confronted with yet another queue, perhaps the biggest we’d seen all day. It was the queue for Southfields underground station. We decided to wait in the pub and get a later train.

All in all a very nice day and a great way to celebrate our wedding anniversary on quite a low budget.

We have spotted this exotic looking bird quite a few times whilst out running and cycling around the lanes just North of Shifnal.
It is very tame and not afraid to take food at very close range. In fact he's a very pleasant pheasant.
Our concern is that he is an escaped or lost pet.

Nellie is only 5ft tall and has struggled for a while finding a suitable road bike frame that would fit.
The staff at Dave Mellor's bike shop in Shrewsbury were brilliant. They took a Specialzed Dolce womens specific bike and finely tuned it to suit.

The lights have gone up this year after town councillors agreed to spend up to £20,000 to ensure the award-winning display was not scuppered by red tape.

The former Wolves and England goalkeeper was helped with the big switch on by town mayor Ron Jowett and BBC Radio Shropshire's Colin Young.

The 90-year-old, who lives in the town, received an MBE from the Queen earlier this month.

Mr Williams, who raised £100,000 for the Alzheimer’s Society in memory of his wife Evelyn, got the award for services to football and charity.

The Mo, slang for moustache, and November come together each year for Movember.

Movember challenges men to change their appearance and the face of men’s health by growing a moustache. The rules are simple, start Movember 1st clean shaven and then grow a moustache for the entire month. The moustache becomes the ribbon for men’s health, the means by which awareness and funds are raised for cancers that affect men. Much like the commitment to run or walk for charity, the men of Movember commit to growing a moustache for 30 days.

The idea for Movember was sparked in 2003 over a few beers in Melbourne, Australia. The plan was simple – to bring the moustache back as a bit of a joke and do something for men’s health. No money was raised in 2003, but the guys behind the Mo realized the potential a moustache had in generating conversations about men’s health. Inspired by the women around them and all they had done for breast cancer, the Mo Bros set themselves on a course to create a global men’s health movement.

In 2004 the campaign evolved and focused on raising awareness and funds for the number one cancer affecting men – prostate cancer. 432 Mo Bros joined the movement that year, raising $55,000 for the Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia – representing the single largest donation they had ever received.

The Movember moustache has grown year on year since then, expanding to the UK, US, Canada, New Zealand, Ireland, Spain, South Africa, The Netherlands and Finland.

In 2009, global participation of Mo Bros and Mo Sistas climbed to 255,755, with over one million donors raising £26 Million (GBP equivalent) for Movember’s global beneficiary partners.

Module 1 is all about setting context in the form of clearing some misconceptions about the often muddy topic of SharePoint governance. This module sheds some light onto these less visible SharePoint governance factors in the form of Governance f-Laws, which will also help to provide the context for the rest of this course

Module 2: The Shared Understanding Toolkit – part 1:

Module 2 pinpoints the SharePoint governance blind spot and introduces the Seven Sigma Shared Understanding Toolkit to counter it. The toolkit is a suite of tools, patterns and practices that can be used to improve SharePoint outcomes. This module builds upon the f-laws of module 1 and specifically examines the “what” and “why” questions of SharePoint Governance. Areas covered include how to identify particular types of problems, how to align the diverse goals of stakeholders, leverage problem structuring methods and constructing a solid business case.

Module 3: The Shared Understanding Toolkit – part 2:

Module 3 continues the Seven Sigma Shared Understanding Toolkit, and focuses on the foundation of “what” and “why” by examining the “who” and “how”. Areas covered include aligning stakeholder expectations, priorities and focus areas and building this alignment into a governance structure and written governance plan that actually make sense and that people will read. We round off by examining user engagement/stakeholder communication and training strategy.

Module 4: Information Architecture trends, lessons learned and key SharePoint challenges

Module 4 examines the hidden costs of poor information management practices, as well as some of the trends that are impacting on Information Architecture and the strategic direction of Microsoft as it develops the SharePoint road map. We will also examine the results from what other organisations have attempted and their lessons learned. We then distil those lessons learned into some the fundamental tenants of modern information architecture and finish off by examining the key SharePoint challenges from a technical, strategic and organisational viewpoint.

Module 5: Information organisation and facets of collaboration

Module 5 dives deeper into the core Information Architecture topics of information structure and organisation. We explore the various facets of enterprise collaboration and identify common Information Architecture mistakes and the strategies to avoid making them.

Module 6: Information Seeking, Search and metadata.

Module 6 examines the factors that affect how users seek information and how they manifest in terms of patterns of use. Building upon the facets of collaboration of module 5, we examine several strategies to improving SharePoint search and navigation. We then turn our attention to taxonomy and metadata, and what SharePoint 2010 has to offer in terms of managed metadata

Module 7: Shared understanding and visual representation – documenting your Information Architecture

Module 7 returns to the theme of governance in the sense of communicating your information architecture through visual or written form. To achieve shared understanding among participants, we need to document our designs in various forms for various audiences.

Putting it all together: From vision to execution

As a take home, we will also supply a USB stick for attendees with a sample performance framework, governance plan, SharePoint ROI calculator (Spreadsheet), sample mind maps of Information Architecture. These tools are the result of years of continual development and refinement "out in the field" and until now have never been released to the public.

We have secured the excellent “etc. Venues” Hatton building for this event. Including light breakfast, lunch, free flowing coffee and drinks and free wifi.

The workshop sessions will be hands on, we provide all of the tools and samples needed but please bring your own laptop.

Commemorative Tour organised by West Midlands Transport Circle to mark the 40th Anniversary of the end of the Trolleybus in Walsall.

The tour covered much of the Wolverhampton-Walsall-Bloxwich routes of the Walsall Corporation trolleybus network.

The tour was undertaken in a 1968-69 Walsall Corporation Daimler Fleetline double decker diesel bus, number 116, owned and driven by Dave and normally based at the Wythall Transport Museum.

Great Big Bike Ride - the start

The Shifnal branch of the Capgemini cycling team set off at 7:15am on Sunday morning to get to Blists Hill in time to register, get photographed and set off soon after 8:00am. We covered a total of 78 miles by the time we got back to Shifnal.

A brilliant, well organised, well marshalled race out on the roads of Ellesmere, back on tracks around The Mere and finishing along the canal towpath via the Marina.
Wonderful selection of home made cakes at the Lakelands School after the race.

Big Bike Ride Route

Decided to have another look at the Severn Hospice Big Bike Ride 100KM route before next week. As it's quite complicated in places, it's a good idea to lodge as much of the route in my head to save time looking at maps on the day...

Shifnal Start 8:30am

The actual start is from Blists Hill Victorian Museum but today I'm shifting it back a few miles it to Shifnal (as that's where we live!).

1st stop for a photo and a Jelly Baby was at Upton Magna, the village where national cycle routes 81 and 45 meet.

At the Elephant & Castle turn left and then right heading north still on route 45 towards Moreton Corbet.

Still on route 45 head north east to Stanton Upon Hine Heath. Lovely little sleepy village with the river Roden flowing through.

Follow the main road through the village turning right and then left until you get to the Stanton Arms pub on the left. This is where we leave route 45, branching east towards High Hatton (don't do what I did a couple of weeks ago and carried on route 45 up Booley Lane).

Cross A53 and A442 to Peplow where there is a rather grand Peplow Hall.

Head south into Little Bolas and at the T-junction turn left towards Great Bolas. Now, the bridge over the River Tern is blocked to traffic but bikes can just squeeze past the concrete blocks.

From Great Bolas head east for about 0.5mile before branching to the right towards Tibberton (we do not go into Tibberton). After about a mile take a left at the t-junction and then after a couple of hundred yards a sharp right towards the agricultural college at Edgmond.

Pass Old Caynton Mill on the right. This is where my friend Tim Edwards (Telford Harriers) lives - it's beautiful!

Pass the Agricultural College and cross over the B5062 (look both ways first!) towards Edgmond and then Lilleshall.

The 3rd manned checkpoint is The Red House pub on the island of the A518. Good place to stop for a Jelly Baby lunch.

At the end of the road through the village turn left towards Lilleshall Abbey along Lilyhurst Lane - heading south-east.

At the end of Lilyhurst Lane take a right at the t-junction down into Sherrifhales. In the village turn left towards Burlington Ford - don't go all the way down to the A5!

Be careful riding through the ford - it's got slippery cobblestones below the water.

Cross the A5 and take a left down Lizard Lane - heading south-east towards Stanton. At the end of Lizard Lane turn right onto the Shifnal Road going underneath the M54.

Don't go all the way into Shifnal but turn left after about 0.5mile after passing under M54.

Staff and guests were forced to flee a 500-year-old hotel and restaurant in Shifnal after a blaze broke out in the cellar.

A guest at Naughty Nell’s in Park Street raised the alarm at about 10.30 last night after hearing a loud bang and then smelling smoke.

He hammered on doors to rouse people in the building as they made their escape.

A total of 35 firefighters were drafted to the scene from across Telford and Shrewsbury to tackle the fire, which damaged beer kegs and an electrical switchboard in the cellar and left the three-storey, timber-framed building smoke logged.

Word Champion triathlete (2006) Tim Don and Embassy World champion (2001, 2004) snooker ace Ronnie OSullivan joined us for a very muddy Sunday morning run on the Wrekin.
Ronnie is in Shropshire competing at the Telford International Centre in the Maplin UK Championships. He loves running as a form of relaxation and keep fit. He runs most days and is aiming to crack 35 minutes for 10K.

Tim took time out from his training schedule to visit friends in Telford. Today was his rest day but still did the 1 hour 40 minute run with us and will probably do a few hours in the pool later!
