Starting from Blists Hill Victorian Museum, Ironbridge at 08:00 in the morning.

Great Big Bike Ride - the start

The Shifnal branch of the Capgemini cycling team set off at 7:15am on Sunday morning to get to Blists Hill in time to register, get photographed and set off soon after 8:00am. We covered a total of 78 miles by the time we got back to Shifnal.

Race organisers : Oswestry Olympians
A brilliant, well organised, well marshalled race out on the roads of Ellesmere, back on tracks around The Mere and finishing along the canal towpath via the Marina.
Wonderful selection of home made cakes at the Lakelands School after the race.

I surprised myself by finishing 8th overall and 1st MV45.

Big Bike Ride Route

Decided to have another look at the Severn Hospice Big Bike Ride 100KM route before next week. As it's quite complicated in places, it's a good idea to lodge as much of the route in my head to save time looking at maps on the day...

Shifnal Start 8:30am

The actual start is from Blists Hill Victorian Museum but today I'm shifting it back a few miles it to Shifnal (as that's where we live!).

1st stop for a photo and a Jelly Baby was at Upton Magna, the village where national cycle routes 81 and 45 meet.

The Corbet Arms in Upton Magna is a good viewing point for spectators not taking part.

The 2nd manned checkpoint is at the church in Shawbury. More pubs and shops here.

At the Elephant & Castle turn left and then right heading north still on route 45 towards Moreton Corbet.

Still on route 45 head north east to Stanton Upon Hine Heath. Lovely little sleepy village with the river Roden flowing through.

The Stanton Arm

Follow the main road through the village turning right and then left until you get to the Stanton Arms pub on the left. This is where we leave route 45, branching east towards High Hatton (don't do what I did a couple of weeks ago and carried on route 45 up Booley Lane).

Cross A53 and A442 to Peplow where there is a rather grand Peplow Hall.

Head south into Little Bolas and at the T-junction turn left towards Great Bolas. Now, the bridge over the River Tern is blocked to traffic but bikes can just squeeze past the concrete blocks.

From Great Bolas head east for about 0.5mile before branching to the right towards Tibberton (we do not go into Tibberton). After about a mile take a left at the t-junction and then after a couple of hundred yards a sharp right towards the agricultural college at Edgmond.

Old Caynton Mill

Pass Old Caynton Mill on the right. This is where my friend Tim Edwards (Telford Harriers) lives - it's beautiful!

Harper Adams Agricultural College

Pass the Agricultural College and cross over the B5062 (look both ways first!) towards Edgmond and then Lilleshall.

The 3rd manned checkpoint is The Red House pub on the island of the A518. Good place to stop for a Jelly Baby lunch.

I always struggle to take my own photo, especially when lunch is waiting...

Ride through Lilleshall passing the monument and the cricket club.

At the end of the road through the village turn left towards Lilleshall Abbey along Lilyhurst Lane - heading south-east.

At the end of Lilyhurst Lane take a right at the t-junction down into Sherrifhales. In the village turn left towards Burlington Ford - don't go all the way down to the A5!

Be careful riding through the ford - it's got slippery cobblestones below the water.

Cross the A5 and take a left down Lizard Lane - heading south-east towards Stanton. At the end of Lizard Lane turn right onto the Shifnal Road going underneath the M54.

Don't go all the way into Shifnal but turn left after about 0.5mile after passing under M54.

The Farmers Market returns to Shifnal after many years of absence. Lovely sunny weather brought the crowds flocking to the multitude of stalls selling local produce.

Staff and guests were forced to flee a 500-year-old hotel and restaurant in Shifnal after a blaze broke out in the cellar.

A guest at Naughty Nell’s in Park Street raised the alarm at about 10.30 last night after hearing a loud bang and then smelling smoke.

He hammered on doors to rouse people in the building as they made their escape.

A total of 35 firefighters were drafted to the scene from across Telford and Shrewsbury to tackle the fire, which damaged beer kegs and an electrical switchboard in the cellar and left the three-storey, timber-framed building smoke logged.
